Imperial (NYTimes), Exchange (WSJ), Milo (Economist), Blanco (Pocket), Tisa (Instapaper), Literata (Play Books)

“A member of Parliament was ceremonially held hostage in Buckingham Palace while the queen visits Westminster, just in case the lawmakers decided not to return her. This is rooted in the 1600s, when the relationship between Parliament and the monarchy was particularly fraught under Charles I.”

“But we don’t need a secret police to turn us into atomized, isolated souls. All it takes is for us to stand by while unbridled capitalism rips apart the temporal preserves that used to let us cultivate the seeds of civil society and nurture the sadly fragile shoots of affection, affinity, and solidarity.”

10 years ago I would die for a computer that could nail these options effortlessly. Today I turn these off moments after I get my hands on every another PC since they are so badly implemented that disabling them drastically make my eyes and life easier.

In the 1970s, when the vintage watch boom started, a LA based dial refinisher, Kirk Rich, did some dials with this design. They became popular & many vintage watch stores in California sent their dials to KR. So dealers in the rest of the US & the rest of the world began to call them the 'California' dial.

“Around the late 70's early 80's customers would ask us for the ‘California dial’ when requesting a refinish. Basically it was because it was easier than saying "Roman Arabic" when describing the mixed number printing. Roman numerals on top with Arabic at bottom. We were pushing a lot of these so much that people from all around would just ask for the California dial when sending us work.”

Idk, but the curfew on the outside of my window and the crowd wandering and peeping behind the barricades invoke immediately from my mind this still frame from “Chernobyl.” It’s at the same time awesome and unnerving to witness how a jammed main road can be choked within momen

I’m far less annoyed by working overtime than being required to look at the display of ThinkPad for even one more second. Every time my eyesight meets the screen I feel like my eyes being fucked; being Full HD or sRGB helps little to make the display more acceptable — the display of my X390 is as atrocious as the one on a lesser E series model I used years ago, and both look as pale as just salvaged from urine.
