“I think those on the front line must have sympathised with the people affected by the disaster, and considered themselves lucky not to live near hazardous industrial parks. I believe they must have done as well as I did in the civil service examination. It is unfortunate that the accident they dealt with wasn’t just a ‘rumour.’”

Self-deprivation could, after all, be rebranded as a form of vanity, of narcissism, of immoderation — taking more than one’s due by another script. Why should I exist on any higher, ultra-curated plane than anyone else?

Unlocked my phone at 6a, found a missed call well after 12a, but surprisingly didn’t feel bad at all, as (a) I do have missed it and there’s no way to travel back then to pick up the phone; and (b) if there will be any repercussion for missing a call during a patently do-not-disturb time period, then so be it and I don’t f*cking care…

I'm an app developer/designer and recently got a new mac pro for my business and wanted to see how it stacked up with my other machines. […] It seems the best bang for your buck right now when it comes to compiling projects is the Mac mini.
Mac Pro Xcode compiling times : iOSProgramming http://t.cn/Ais6mET4
However, Mac mini’s graphic performance is so frail that it even struggles driving a single 4K at 60fps it announces to support. The only browser that does’t jelly under this configuration is Safari, which unfortunately is a jelly that doesn’t stick by itself.

It is for the same rationale that the uncomfortably tiny font size of HN makes sense; only from this zoomed-out perspective can you feel the shape and texture of the discussion, instead of being overflowed and taken away by the walls of texts.
I’ve been struggling to find an efficient way to read Hacker News and now it seems to me the best way is to skim thru threads and be aware of how the topic develop around (and from) the original linked-to article, but not to get too much into comments, since the most valuable thing you can get from HN is what are being thought by hackers currently rather than what their thoughts are.

- Sometimes it‘s fine (and necessary) to burn some money to make your life easier. Mac mini)
- Badly designed as Office for Mac is, it’s RIDICULOUS for macOS Catalina to require the user’s permission before letting Excel write to ~/Desktop.
- You CAN use chatting apps in an asynchronous manner and don’t need to give read receipts a shit.

“A book does not watch us reading it; it cannot morph itself, page by page, to suit our tastes, or deliver to us only depictions of people we already know and among whom we feel comfortable. It cannot note our reactions and then skew its stories to confirm our worldview or reinforce our prejudices. A book does not know when we pick it up and put it down; it cannot nudge us into the belief that we must look at it first thing upon waking and last thing at night, and though it may prove addictive, it will never know exactly how or why. Only the algorithms can do all this—and so much more.”
A denouncement of algorithm disguised in a “defense of fiction.”
