One moment we were simply walking, the next ‘on a walk’: aimless, unguided, unending. No destination, only a journey. It’s not a pleasure, but it’s the best we’ve got, all of us walking in place until we have somewhere to walk to.

“Chinese food is a good match for fake meat - their meat dishes are usually so slathered in sauce and intermixed with vegetables that any deficiencies in the meat are easy to hide with good performance on the sauce and veggie front. Also, American Chinese food meat seems inherently suspicious. Like those weird little puffy ball-like bits of chicken - what are those? They already seem weird enough that it's a small step from there to completely fake soy derivative product.”

One of the lessons concerns not just epidemiology but also epistemology: the theory of how we know what we know. Epidemiology isn’t physics. Human bodies are not Newtonian bodies. When it comes to a crisis that combines social and biological forces, we’ll do well to acknowledge the causal patchwork. What’s needed isn’t Ockham’s razor but Ockham’s quilt.

These works also give us an emotional registry of the feelings — smallness, sublimity, foreboding, tranquillity — that snow evokes. Paint’s qualities — density, fluidity, the ability to be layered — can make it inherently mimetic of snow, as with the ridges visible in Gallace’s brushwork. The physical hardship of painting in frigid plein air was treated as a test of endurance, fortitude and perhaps masculinity.

The essential experience of Chinese poetry is all but untranslatable. Transference, parallels, metonymy, and correspondences across words and lines generate a radically different poetic realm than lexical meanings produce in English-language poetry. Hinton notes that the Chinese language is not constructed around “a center of identity”; each time we see an “I” in a translation of Tang poetry, it was almost certainly not in the original text. The “I” exists and dissolves, but not without altering the loom.

A conversion narrative is built into every autobiography: the writer purports to be the one who remembers, who saw, who did, who felt, but the writer is no longer that person. In writing things down, she is reborn. And yet still defined by the actions she took, even if she now distances herself from them. To be hard is to let things roll off you, to live in the present, not to dwell or worry. To become a writer is to have left early no matter what time you got home.

The attempts [of tech companies] to dress up [last week’s] actions as part of a coherent and deliberate decision-making structure were trying to mask an uncomfortable truth about our most important speech forums: Platforms can and will do what they like… A tiny group of people in Silicon Valley are defining modern discourse, ostensibly establishing a Twilight Zone where the rules are something between democratic governance and journalism, but they’re doing it on the fly in ways that suit them…

The web is 30 years old today

Just as we feel necessary when we mention the word “free” to distinguish between “free as in speech” and “free as in beer,” it should also be a morally mandatory practice to distinguish “the web as a technology” (which does and will live on) and “the web as a spirit” (which is dying).

Accept > Accept All Changes Shown,最后恢复 Insertions and Deletions 的显示。
